Sudoku is one of the most powerful, evidence based brain training exercises available, especially for protecting and maintaining cognitive health in later life.

Each puzzle demands sustained focused attention, working memory, and logical reasoning, three abilities that naturally decline with age and are hit earliest in dementia.  Players must hold multiple possibilities in mind, test hypotheses, and systematically eliminate wrong options, giving the prefrontal cortex and parietal lobes an intense but enjoyable workout.  Studies show regular Sudoku practice can slow the rate of cognitive decline and build strong cognitive reserves.

Crucially, Sudoku induces a natural flow state.  The rules are simple yet endlessly challenging, creating the perfect balance of difficulty and achievability.  As numbers click into place, the brain releases small bursts of dopamine – the “quiet satisfaction” neurotransmitter - producing genuine calm and reducing anxiety.  This mindful, meditative quality is why many dementia patients find Sudoku deeply soothing only gentle, rewarding progress when solutions can be found.

Unlike frantic games, Sudoku encourages slow, deliberate thinking which is exactly what can preserve executive function and emotional well being.  Time can pass quickly when deep in a game but just 20 to 30 minutes a day is plenty to keep neural pathways firing, sharpen concentration, and deliver measurable protection against memory loss.
